Have you been to Schenectady lately or more importantly Downtown Schenectady?

If not, I suggest you plan a trip to Downtown since a lot has changed in just a few short years. The downtown of Schenectady was like most other downtowns in several cities across the United States, businesses of yesteryear were closed and boarded up and in need of repair. Many store fronts had for sale signs that looked as if they were put in place 20-25 years ago with no signs of revitalization. The downtown area was pretty much abandoned for large shopping malls.

Today, due to efforts of local residents and local government officials, Downtown Schenectady is rebounding. In just a few short years, restaurants, hotels,  a movie theater, specialty shops, coffee shops, apartments, and fortune 500 corporations have all moved into Downtown Schenectady.

Downtown Schenectady still has it’s original “Christmas Story” charm since many of its buildings were saved and built to modern day standards. New cobble stone heated sidewalks, parking lots with attendants, and flower planters all added to the Downtown area.

All of these things are great since many buildings were off the tax roles. Now, once again they are back on, which eases the burden on you and me as local property owners and residents.

There is so much to be proud in Schenectady.  History shows that a vibrant and booming downtown will bring more business to an area which in turn will increase home values!

It has been a long time since Schenectady was booming and once again we have the opportunity to rebound which is why we are asking for your help in Fixing Erie Boulevard now!

Erie Blvd is the main corridor to Schenectady and the city has obtained $14 mil. in Federal and State funding to help  this key gateway. This grant cannot be used anywhere else other than Erie Blvd or it will have to go back to the State which means some other City in NY will receive it.

Some Details About Erie Blvd

Erie Blvd is the main corridor to Schenectady and has not received any updates since it was built. It has the look of many old industrial cities that were once booming but no longer a destination of modern times. It is a wide four lane that is impossible to cross safely by any pedestrian or vehicle.

Many buildings are vacant and in desperate need of repair. There are businesses still thriving on Erie and with this Project, and these businesses will receive a much needed boost in customers; since the current state of Erie is a fast moving 4 lane highway where you have to move fast or get run down. The speed limit is currently 45 but traffic moves much faster. The Erie Project will slow traffic down.

There are many reasons for this project and here are a few:
1. Continued beatification of Schenectady to carry from the State Street Revitalization
2. It is one of the first things new prospective residents and business owners see and it is not a good first impression.
3. It will allow for more businesses to open which will ease the tax burden on local residents.
4. The project is being funded by a Federal & State grant. The money must be used on this project or the funding will be returned or given to another city for another project.
5. It will slow traffic down so local businesses on Erie will benefit from new customers.
6. It will allow for an easier way into the downtown area which will benefit local businesses.
7. It makes sense to connect the State Street project to the major corridor of where people enter the City.

Please take a minute to show your support and make your voice heard in supporting the Erie Project!
